Gait Cycle

The movement of the foot on the ground.  There are three phases: Heel Strike, Mid Phase and Toe Off.

Last

The mould of the shoe.  These vary enormously between manufacturers.

Medial Post

A firmer section of the midsole to support the foot and control overpronation.

Midsole

The shock absorbing part of the shoe made of a rubberised compound called EVA.

Neutral

A bio-mechanically efficient gait cycle.

Outsole

A very strong and durable rubber tread.

Overpronation

Excessive inward rolling of the foot in the mid phase of the gait cycle.  Can expose the runner to a wide variety of injury problems.

Pronation

As the heel strikes the ground, weight is transferred from the outside of the foot to the inside.

Supination

Limited inward rolling of the foot during the Mid Phase of the gait cycle.
